Dominating the U.S. and global charts since its release in July 2024 on her second studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, “Birds of a Feather” by Billie Eilish has captured the attention of music lovers everywhere.

In the United States, the song soared to position #1 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, where, at the time of writing this report, it has stayed for 12 weeks. Meanwhile, on October 12th, 2024, it jumped from No.6 to No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Will “Birds of a Feather” be Eilish’s second No.1 on the Hot 100 charts?

With more than 58 million views on YouTube’s trending music hit list, it’s possible. After all, Shaboozey has been hogging the #1 spot for 13 weeks now, so it’s only a matter of time.

Globally, the song also peaked at #1 on the Billboard Global Chart. It ranks #4 on Shazam Top 200 (a music identification app). It is topping the charts in Australia, New Zealand, and many more countries. And. It ranks in the top 5 in Belgium, Germany, and other regions.

The song has been topping charts for 22 weeks now, and according to Google Trends, online searches for ‘Birds of a Feather Lyrics’ have skyrocketed, too.

What The Song Is About

Exploring themes of intense love, vulnerability, and commitment, “Birds of a Feather” is about a bond between two people that’s SO strong, nothing and no one can break it. As the song title suggests, the couple are so alike and inseparable that they will be together forever. The song’s message is captured perfectly in the first verse of the lyrics.

“I want you to stay
‘Til I’m in the grave
‘Til I rot away, dead and buried
‘Til I’m in the casket you carry
If you go, I’m goin’ too, uh
‘Cause it was always you.”

Billie Eilish wrote this song with her brother and producer, Finneas. It was supposed to be a traditional love song, according to NBC. But when the siblings sat down to write the lyrics, one idea led to another, and they added an emotional twist.

The Song’s Sound & Style

The Los Angeles Times describes “Birds of a Feather “as a neo-new-wave jam. It also carries the nostalgic feel of a classic ’70s or ’80s pop song. It has a steady rhythmic melody that makes you want to dance. And I really like how its minimalist production allows Eilish’s smooth, breathy vocals to stand out.

On his TikTok channel, DJ, producer, and Apple Music interviewer Zane Lowe compares “Birds of a Feather” to George Michael’s Wham!, saying it’s one of the best pop songs ever created. Also, in the same video HERE,  Eilish tells Zane that she had to belt higher than ever before to sing this song.

What Fans Think

In this Reddit thread, fans appear to love the song. But. They feel the music video has no concept – is low budget – and very dull. On the other hand, I cannot find a bad word said about it in the 50,000+ YouTube comments on the official music video – or anywhere else online.

And let’s not forget that the song is topping charts worldwide and ranking #4 on Shazam. So. Clearly, there are more lovers than haters. Watch the music video below and decide for yourself.
